Gotlands kust is one of the Baltic’s most distinctive – limestone shores, clear water and the famous rauks, the limestone pillars the sea has sculpted at Langhammars and Digerhuvud on Fårö. To paddle a sea kayak around Gotland and Fårö is to move along a coast like no other in the country, with open sea, caves and old fishing villages.
Paddling along the coast
The coast switches between sheltered bays and long, open stretches towards the Baltic. Around the rauk areas and Fårö there are dramatic cliff formations to paddle along, and the clear water makes the underwater life visible. The sea is open and exposed – the open stretches need a weather check and experience, while the bays give calmer paddling if you want to take it gently.
