Kosterhavet off Strömstad in northern Bohuslän is Sweden’s first marine national park – one of the country’s richest sea areas, with clear water, bare cliff islands and marine life unmatched in Swedish waters. To paddle a sea kayak here is to move through a living aquarium of kelp, seals and bird skerries.
Paddling in Kosterhavet
Around Nordkoster and Sydkoster you find both sheltered sounds for calmer paddling and more open water towards Kosterfjorden and Väderöarna for the experienced. The steep underwater threshold gives unusually cold and salt water, which is the base of the rich life. Seal watching, snorkelling and long day trips between the islands belong to the experience.
Good to know
Rent a sea kayak and SUP at Koster Adventures on Sydkoster or at Skärgårdsidyllen in Grebbestad, which has summer-open centres in the park. The sea is open and wind-exposed – check the forecast, stay in sheltered sounds if you are unused and always wear a life jacket. Respect the national park’s rules and bird protection areas.
