In the lower Dalälven area the river spreads into a wide landscape of delta lakes, islets and rapids, and in the middle lies Färnebofjärdens nationalpark. Here the biological border between southern and northern nature runs, which makes the area one of Sweden’s richest wildernesses – with elk, beaver and unusually rich birdlife. The area lies in Gästrikland on the border with Uppland and Dalarna.
Paddling in the delta country
Färnebofjärden is made for canoeing: still fjärds and sounds mixed with wooded islands and slow-moving river stretches. You can paddle at an easy pace between the islets, listen for black-throated diver and make a shore stop on an island. Stay off the rapid stretches if you are unused, and check flow and regulation – Dalälven is a large and partly regulated river.
Good to know
Rent a canoe in the region, for example at Smörnäs Friluftsgård or Sportcentralen Högbo Bruk. Respect the national park’s rules and bird protection areas, bring a map for the wide fjärds and always wear a life jacket. See more rentals and put-ins on the map.
