Nordmarken in western Värmland, around Årjäng near the Norwegian border, is one of Sweden’s best-known canoe areas. A net of linked lakes lets you paddle for days and join up your own tours – from quiet small lakes with short portages to larger water with locks.
Paddling in the area
The area suits both weekend trips for beginners and longer stage trips for experienced paddlers. Many choose to paddle one way and let the rental arrange transport back. You rent a canoe and kayak locally at Nordmarkens Kanot Center.
Good to know
Respect allemansrätten and landowners at rests and when camping, and check current rules and lock times before you go. Bring a chart or map – the lake system is large and easy to get lost in if you are unused.
