Öland is Sweden’s second-largest island and one of the country’s sunniest places – a long, thin strip in the Baltic with shallow sand beaches, limestone slabs and world-class birdlife. Around Öland there is forgiving, often shallow paddle water, from the family-friendly sand beaches in the north to Ottenby’s bird-rich headland in the south.

The coast is in many places shallow and quiet, which makes it kind to beginners and families – especially around the long sand beaches in the north such as Böda. At the same time Öland is an island in open sea, so the wind can quickly build waves and make crossings demanding. Stay close to land and in the lee in wind, and enjoy the clear water and the wide views.
