Sjön Åsnen

Tingsryd, Kronobergs län

Sjön Åsnen in southern Småland, about 35 km south of Växjö, is Småland’s second-largest lake – a wide inland archipelago with countless islands, peninsulas, bays and necks. Parts of the lake belong to Åsnens nationalpark, and paddling between the islands is one of the best ways to experience the area.

Paddling on Åsnen

The quiet lake water and the labyrinthine archipelago make Åsnen forgiving even for beginners and families, while the size gives experienced paddlers plenty of room for multi-day trips with camping on the islands. The birdlife is rich – watch for osprey and black-throated diver.

Good to know

Rent a canoe or kayak at the lake at Getnö Gård, which sits right by the national park. Bring a map – the lake is large and island-rich – and respect bird protection areas and allemansrätten at rests and when camping.
