Storsjön is Jämtland’s great lake and the landscape’s natural midpoint, with Östersund on the eastern shore and the green island Frösön in the middle. The lake offers open views towards the mountains in the west and is a beautiful, forgiving paddle setting in the middle of town – and the tale of Storsjöodjuret of course belongs here.
Paddling on Storsjön
Around Frösön and in the bays at Östersund there is sheltered water that suits most people, while the more open parts need a weather check – the lake is large and can quickly become wind-exposed. From here you also reach the sound towards Vallsundet and quieter stretches to the south.
Good to know
Rent a kayak and outdoor kit at GearRentle in Östersund. Stay close to land if you are unused, check the weather and always wear a life jacket. The water is cool even in summer.
