Vänern is Sweden’s and the EU’s largest lake – a true inland sea bordering Värmland, Västergötland and Dalsland. Despite the size, Vänern holds several island-rich archipelagos that give sheltered paddling, among others around Kristinehamn, Karlstad, Kållandsö/Läckö and Djurö nationalpark out in the open water.

Vänern can behave like a sea: waves build over the large open surfaces and the weather can turn quickly. The archipelagos along the coasts offer sheltered sounds and islets that suit most people, while open passages and the outer archipelago need experience and good weather planning. Djurö nationalpark in the middle of the lake is a goal for the experienced.

Rent a kayak and canoe at Karlstad Paddlarklubb at Klarälven’s mouth in Karlstad. Treat Vänern as open sea – check the forecast, plan short open passages, stay close to land if you are unused and always wear a life jacket.
