Vänern is Sweden’s and the EU’s largest lake – a veritable sea bordering Värmland, Västergötland and Dalsland. Despite the size, Vänern houses several nautical archipelagoes that provide protected paddling, including around Kristinehamn, Karlstad, Kållandsö/Läckö and Djurö National Park out in the open water.

Vänern can behave like a sea: waves build up over the large open surfaces and the weather can switch quickly. The archipelago along the coasts offer protected sound and holmar that suits most, while open passages and outer archipelago require habit and good weather planning. The Djurö National Park in the middle of the lake is a goal for the experienced.
