Vindelälven is one of Sweden’s four undeveloped national rivers – free-flowing all the way from the fells at Ammarnäs down through Lappland to the confluence with Umeälven. It belongs to the biosphere reserve Vindelälven-Juhtatdahka and ranks among Europe’s last true wilderness rivers.
Paddling on Vindelälven
The river switches between still lake stretches and strong rapids – the best-known, such as Trollforsen, are not paddleable and need a carry. The upper parts around Ammarnäs and Sorsele offer both quieter stretches for canoe and demanding rapids for the experienced and for packraft. This is wilderness paddling that needs experience, planning and respect for the water’s power.

Rent a canoe and SUP at Ammarnäs Livs or canoe, SUP and kit at Outdoor Ticket in Sorsele. Discharge varies sharply with snowmelt, and rapid stretches need the right experience and kit. Mountain water is cold – dress for cold, plan retreat routes and always wear a life jacket.
