Vindelälven is one of Sweden’s four unbuilt national rivers – freely flowing all the way from the mountains at Ammarnäs down through Lappland to the confluence of Umeälven. It is part of the Vindelälven-Juhtatdahka biosphere area and is counted as Europe’s last real wilderness squads.
Paddling in Vindelälven
The elves switch between still lakes and heavy rapids – the most famous, such as the Trollforsen, are not paddle-like but require a bearing. The upper parts of Ammarnäs and Sorsele offer both quieter parties for canoe and challenging rapids for the habit and for packraft. This is wilderness paddling that requires experience, planning and respect for the power of the water.

Rent canoe and SUP at Ammarnäs Livs or canoe, SUP and equipment at Outdoor Ticket in Sorsele. Waterfed varies greatly with snow melting, and fors parties require the right habit and equipment. Fjällwater is cold – dress for cold, plan retreat routes and always wear the life jacket.
