The first stage of Strömsholms kanal crosses the North Barken in Dalarna, from Smedjebackens guest harbour to the port of Söderbärke. The described trail is about 15 km; a straighter journey between the ports is approximately 12 km.
Count for about 4-6 hours including breaks. The stage has no locks to pass. The lake has open water surfaces, so choose the route after wind and weather. The name flatwater does not mean that the lake is always windsty or easy to paddle.
