Paddling in Hälsingland

Hälsingland joins a soft Bothnian Sea coast with the great rivers Ljusnan and Voxnan and a rich inland-lake landscape – a versatile paddle landscape where you can choose between quiet river, open coast and still forest lakes.

The landscape’s pulse is Ljusnan and its tributary Voxnan, which offer everything from family-friendly flatwater to livelier rapid stretches around Voxnabruk and Edsbyn. Here you paddle through genuine northern forest country with plenty of rest spots if you want to turn the trip into a multi-day adventure.

At the coast lie Söderhamns skärgård and Axmar bruk, a relatively sheltered coast for sea paddling, while Näsviken at Hudiksvall is the base for one of Sweden’s larger paddle rentals. Around Järvsö and Dellensjöarna there is also still lake water in the well-known Hälsingland landscape.

Season

The best paddling season is May–September. The rivers’ water level varies with snowmelt and rain – spring high water needs more experience, while high summer and late summer are the calmest. The coast needs the usual weather and wind check.
