Paddling in Jämtland

Jämtland is the landscape of mountains and great waters – with Storsjön, wide lake systems such as Ströms Vattudal and slow-moving mountain rivers the landscape offers canoe and kayak paddling in genuine northern wilderness.

The landscape’s heart is Storsjön at Östersund, Sweden’s fifth-largest lake, with open views towards the mountains and the green island Frösön in the middle. Around the landscape lie countless lakes and rivers – in the north Ströms Vattudal spreads around Strömsund, a long branched lake system among the country’s finest canoe waters.

In Strömsunds kommun you paddle among others Jougdån Kajakled, quiet water in untouched country. Westward the mountain country rises towards the Norwegian border, where slow-moving river stretches and mountain lakes draw those who want multi-day adventures far from people. Distances are large and the weather changeable – plan well and always keep a margin.

Season

The paddling season is short and intense, mainly June–August. Mountain water is cold year-round and the weather can turn quickly – have clothes for cold, check the water level in the rivers and always wear a life jacket.
