Uppland is dominated by Stockholms skärgård – tens of thousands of islands, skerries and rocks that make the landscape Sweden’s perhaps best-known sea-kayak water.

From town you paddle straight out into one of the world’s largest archipelagos. Stockholms Kajakled joins over 140 km of quality-checked sea-kayak routes in four stages, meant for multi-day trips with wilderness camping between the islands.

If you want to get out quickly you rent a kayak in the middle of town at Kajakkompaniet on Kungsholmen, or go half an hour out to Vaxholm where Skärgårdens Kanotcenter rents kayak, canoe and SUP and arranges both guided and self-guided tours.

Season

The sea-kayak season is mainly May–September. The archipelago needs a check on wind, wave height and forecast – the outer archipelago is exposed and suits experienced paddlers, while the inner archipelago and the city’s water are calmer.

The inner archipelago and the city’s water suit beginners, preferably with a guide. The outer archipelago and open fjärds are exposed to wind and waves and need experience. Always wear a life jacket and check the weather.
