Paddling in Västmanland

Västmanland is the landscape of Bergslagen and canals – with Strömsholms kanal, northern Mälaren’s bays and countless forest lakes in the mining country the landscape offers quiet, accessible canoe and kayak paddling in central Sweden.

Through the landscape runs Strömsholms kanal, a classic waterway from Bergslagen down towards Mälaren, linking lakes and locks into fine multi-day trips. To the south, Mälaren’s northern bays open for both lake paddling and city-close tours.

In Bergslagen to the north there are wilderness-tinged lake systems – at Malingsbo-Kloten you paddle clear-water lakes in a nature reserve, and along Svartälven around Hällefors you meet a slow-moving river with forest at the edge. Together, canal, lake and river make Västmanland a forgiving landscape for flatwater paddling.

Season

The paddling season is mainly May–September. Canal and lake water are stable all summer; check lock times along Strömsholms kanal and water level in the rivers to the north.
