Paddling in Värmlands län

Värmland is one of Sweden’s foremost paddle landscapes – thousands of lakes, slow-moving rivers and a living timber-floating history make the landscape a paradise for canoe and kayak.

The landscape’s signature water is Klarälven, Sweden’s longest river, which on its lower stretches through Hagfors and Torsby flows wide and still – perfect for multi-day canoe trips where the current carries you forward. The timber-floating heritage still lives here, and you can paddle the same water the logs once floated down.

To the west, towards the Norwegian border, lies Nordmarkens sjösystem around Årjäng – a classic canoe area with linked lakes, short portages and locks where you can join up your own tours for days. Around the landscape there are also countless forest lakes if you want to paddle still water for an evening.

You rent a canoe and kayak locally at among others Vildmark i Värmland in Torsby and Nordmarkens Kanot Center in Årjäng, both of which arrange transport so you can paddle one way.

Season

The best paddling season is May–September. Remember that the water level and current in Klarälven vary with snowmelt and rain – spring high water needs more experience, while high summer and late summer are the calmest.
